I have owned an E4200 v1 for a couple years and after trailing out DD-WRT and Tomato, I would say that Tomato is the way to go for E4200 v1. E4200 V2 is not supported so I cannot speak for it. I know that DD-WRT for E4200 is a WIP and has major issues including non-functional SSH on latest build among several other issues. However, although it bears the same version number for many years (Tomato 1.28) it has changed so much that we will probably drop that "1.28" shortly as it no longer means anything. So I did some further research, and decided to try tomato even though I was taking a risk and flashing from dd-wrt to tomato. I did a factory reset, and tried to tftp tomato for the E2500 v3. It also did not flash and I still had the same dd-wrt big firmware.
